Home Gym Flooring

Making sure to take time when selecting home gym flooring can make all the difference between a home fitness center that will suit your needs and one that may need frequent repair.

Basement home gyms are the simplest when it comes to handling the flooring. Most modern homes have concrete floors, which absorb much of the sound and physical impact a home gym creates. Individuals with basement gyms can rest assured that no amount of heavy equipment will damage the concrete, and the natural insulation the material provides will allow for workouts at almost any time of day without disturbing other members of the household.

Alternatively, many athletes are attracted to the clean, comfortable look of wooden floors for a home gym. Although wood floors offer an obvious aesthetic appeal, the fragility of the material will require a layer of padding and insulation beneath it to absorb the weight of the equipment without cracking. Additional foam mats above the paneling are recommended for any section of the floor where equipment is placed. This will prevent scuffing on the wood, thereby increasing the life of the material. It will also significantly cut down on equipment noise outside the exercise room.

As a safety measure for any gym, it is still recommended that a layer of rubber mats be put down in areas where floor exercises will take place. Many kinds of such flooring are available, including puzzle-like sectioned mats that can be assembled by hand to fit a variety of spaces.
