Weight Training Equipment

Free Weights

A core requirement in most kinds of fitness training (and all strength training) is the use of free weights. These are simply defined as any kind of weight that does not require a weight machine in order to work, with the major examples being barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and medicine balls.

Kettlebells, medicine balls and many types of dumbbells are fixed weights – they come in a variety of sizes but their heaviness cannot be changed. But some dumbbells, as well as all barbells, are adjustable weights with two parts – a bar and a series of plates that can be added to increase the overall weight of the equipment. The advantage all these weights have over weight machines is that they can be used in various ways with many combinations of muscle groups. This can be a double-edged sword, as they also rely on the individual’s ability to control them and know when to stop using weights that might be more than a particular athlete can handle.

When selecting weights for purchase, investigate the durability of different brands. More durable also can mean more expensive, but if you many on getting a lot of use out of them the additional investment may be worth it. Also consider that you’ll need to have storage space to accommodate the weights you buy. Even space-effective equipment like dumbbells can easily overtake your house if you buy them in quantity. If you look, you’ll find compact alternatives like Aquabells and “selectorized” dumbbells that require even less space to store.
