Best Butt Exercises
One of the biggest reasons women give for starting to exercise is that they want to shape, tone and flatten their backside. The butt muscles (gluteus, plural gluteals) are some of the easiest muscles in the body to tone up and define, and there are literally dozens of ways in which you can give yourself a prettier, perkier posterior—some of which require very little effort at all!
Walking, for example, is probably the best exercise your backside can get. It’s free, requires no separate equipment, and absolutely no instruction whatsoever. Take Shanks’ pony wherever you can – a quick run to the corner store, or during your lunchbreak at work—and watch your backside get firmer by the day. To greater enhance this, try taking a hiking trip at the weekend, preferably up hills and down into valleys—hiking is one of the best ways to reduce stress as well as get fit, and it’s an exercise you can do with the whole family in tow!
Martial arts, particularly something with lots of fast aerobic movements such as kickboxing, kung fu or karate, are great for all-over toning, but the explosive kicks and alternating patterns can tone the entire body, as well as the backside. Boxercise, tae-bo and other aerobic exercise martial arts derivatives are useful as well, but they don’t have the added benefit of the confidence and peace of mind that active self-defense instruction can encourage.
In the gym, look for exercise machines such as the glute master, or spend some time doing squats or leg presses. All of these exercises are godsends in the quest for a rock—hard butt, as they work the muscle in a much more dynamic and explosive fashion than walking or kickboxing ever could.
Aerobics, particularly step aerobics, contain a wealth of exercises that tighten and work the gluteals, making it another great choice for toning the backside. The repeated stepping motions ensure that the glutes get a continuous workout throughout the session, and can lead to very tight and defined muscles.
Lastly, get on the bike and ride. Cycling, be it fixed-wheel or a standard bicycle, is second only to walking for working on the butt. Again, the big benefit of cycling is that it is an activity that gets you out into the fresh air, particularly if you’ve got a forest or park nearby, and is something the whole family or a bunch of friends can enjoy with very little initial expenditure. Try cycling to work some time – it may take longer than the car or the bus, but it’s also a dozen times better for you!
