Aerobic Weight Training

Aerobic weight training is a general term that refers to the combination of weight training with aerobic exercise. Normally, these two types of fitness occupy opposing spheres. Aerobic exercise, also referred to as cardiovascular or “cardio,” utilizes fitness regimens of moderate intensity over longer periods of time in order to strengthen the heart and respiratory system. Aerobic activity encourages existing muscle tissue to become more oxygen-efficient as the result of low-impact training. Its opposite is anaerobic exercise, which promotes a higher degree of physical performance in short-duration activities and a focus on power over endurance. Weightlifting is an anaerobic activity, in which muscles are intentionally overexerted, thereby denying them oxygen and causing the body to create more muscle tissue in response.

In practice, weight training can be combined with aerobic exercise simply by adding weights to normal aerobic routines. Walking or running with ankle weights, or using hand weights during floor aerobics are easy ways to accomplish both types of exercise. Additionally, general strength training during aerobics can be achieved through activities such as “spinning” or circuit training. “Spinning” uses stationary bicycles in a classroom setting in which participants are taken through a series of resistance-based exercises while cycling at the same time. Circuit training refers to an exercise routine in which the body goes through a series of high-intensity activities very quickly, both aerobic and anerobic. These types of exercise are often avoided by those wishing only to build muscle mass, as aerobic activity can decrease the body’s need to create additional muscle tissue.
